Why does everything in Headscratch expire?

For users of other apps like Todoist or Google Tasks it may seem weird when you first start using Headscratch that every task you create has an expiry date (i.e. a due date). In most other apps, a task can have a due date but it doesn’t have to. Headscratch is different because I’ve personally found that if a task doesn’t have one, then I just never get to it. There’s always something going on and so some tasks I’d just never get around to doing and they’d just sit there hanging around like a bad smell. Maybe I’ll get to it tomorrow, or the next week, or the next week… Headscratch requires an expiry date precisely so that it forces your todo list to move along, and either get done or get out of the way.

At least for me, I don’t have enough time to do everything. Some tasks I’ll just jot down to get them out of my head, but it’s not actually something important or something that needs to be done. Maybe it’s a great idea, maybe it’s a terrible idea but I don’t really know yet. If that idea gets left unchecked then it can just sit there accruing forever, staring at me. With Headscratch maybe that idea has an expiry of 2 weeks (that’s the default but you can change that). And I’ll see that task in my forecast notification and in the app every few days, and on the 2 week mark I’ll get a notification saying that it has expired and then I’ll have to make that decision. It’s either something I want to do, and I’ve had 2 weeks to do it, or it’s something I don’t actually care about and then I can dismiss it. It either gets done or it gets thrown in the trash, it doesn’t just sit there forever more until I finally admit defeat in a year when I can’t actually remember why I wrote it in the first place.
